IELTS tests the complete range of English language skills which will commonly be encountered when studying or training in English-speaking countries.
These are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
There are two versions of the IELTS Test:
Academic (to study at an English-speaking university)
General Training (for work experience or immigration purposes)
The scores are not interchangeable so if you have any doubt about which of the IELTS Tests you have to take, contact us.
The IELTS Test can be very challenging and if you fail it, you will have to wait at least 3 months before you can try again. (As of the 1st of May 2006 in Chile, you no longer have to wait the 3 months).
IELTS is recognised as an entrance requirement by Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand universities and for secondary, vocational and training programmes. American academic institutions are increasingly accepting IELTS for admissions purposes.
IELTS is accepted by many professional organisations world-wide including:
The IELTS Test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes and is divided into the following sections:
Listening - 4 sections (40 questions) - 30 minutes + 10 Answer Transfer
Reading - 3 sections (40 questions) - 60 minutes
Writing - 2 tasks (of at least 150 and 250 words) - 60 minutes
Speaking - 3 Parts - Between 10 and 15 minutes
All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules.
The Reading and Writing modules are different depending on whether the Academic or General Training Test is taken.
Candidates receive a score for each module of the IELTS test as well as an overall score.
These scores are called Band Scores.
Each Band corresponds to a descriptive statement giving a summary of the English of a candidate classified at that level.
Overall Band Scores can be reported in either whole or half Bands.
Candidates receive scores on a band scale from 1 to 9.
The nine bands and their descriptive statements are as follows:
| 9 | Expert User | Has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding. |
|---|---|---|

| 6 | Competent User | Has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations. |
| 5 | Modest User | Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field. |
